Head for Tenerife with its stylish resorts. Lively and sophisticated, Puerto de la Cruz clusters around a former fishing harbour; Costa de Adeje on the northern end of Playa de las Americas, is ideal for watersports and close to a 27-hole golf course; Playa de las Americas has an international atmosphere, with beaches of dark volcanic sands and Los Cristianos is south of Playa de las Americas, more sophisticated than its playful neighbour. The spectacular sand dunes of Gran Canaria give way to a lush, tropical interior rising to the steep slopes of Cruz de Tejede. San Agustin centres around the beach with just a handful of relaxed bars and restaurants. Maspalomas is renowned for its fabulous beaches and desert-like dunes as well as golf and two waterparks. For a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere Playa del Inglés has an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops.
Los Cristianos is 3km southeast of Playa de las Americas and is popular with families. The resort is more sophisticated than its neighbour, and people-watching from one of the many pavement cafés is a favourite pastime, as is watching the yachts gently bobbing up and down in the harbour.
